Liberals against Gay Marriage

Welcome to the newliberal update. Twitter

I am a yellow dog democrat.
Here's why I supported President Obama.

You can see some of my personal beliefs throughout this blog, but on today's topic:

We need Democrats to stand against gay marriage.
We need Democrats to stand against the agenda of the gay rights lobby.
There is a group of people who are determined to change our society regardless of the implications and whether the American people agree.
They have been working in Hollywood for decades, and you can see the results not only in
many t.v. shows and movies, but even in commercials.
There has been an assault on traditional marriage, a celebration of divorce, and a drive
not only to tolerate but accept as equal people engaging in a homosexual lifestyle.

I would stipulate some people are born gay. But some also choose that and other deviant lifestyles. In America, we shouldn't seek to make everything bad or strange illegal, but we should strive to build our culture strong and make it sustainable for our future generations.
As Democrats we need to strengthen the insitution of marriage by making it harder to get married, and harder to get divorced. Part of our problem today is that we have allowed the institution to wither and it has so much so, that the radical leftists are in the process of redefining it. We truly are defining deviancy down.
So as Democrats we need to look at the tax code, waiting periods before marriage, rules about joint ownership, and just our approach in civil society to make marriage more meaningful.
It is not enough to just be against gay marriage, we need to be for a stronger union.

There are some who are celebrating all of the ballot initatives that are defining marriage correctly, and ban gay marriage. But I look at the closeness of some of the votes, where over 47% of people are either supporting gay marriage or not wanting to define traditional marriage as one man and one woman. Also, the younger generation is clearly more supportive of gay marriage and gay rights in general. This is an important time when we as Democrats need to reverse this trend.

We need to say it is ok for us to believe it's not ok to be gay.
I'm like millions of other Democrats who wouldn't want my children to be gay.
While we should treat everyone with respect, we the people through our government have a right to define our culture and laws for the common good.

Now realistically, I didn't believe President Obama when he claims to agree with me that he believes marriage is between1 man and 1 woman. I think he was just pandering to the voting public. Now that he has come out in full support of changing marriage, he's at least being honest.   But we as Democrats need to strengthen the political hand of fellow party people who believe in traditional values.  Think how far Democrats who support gun rights have come in the past two decades.

We don't want openly gay people serving in the military.
We don't want school textbooks presenting gay relationships as normal.
We don't want the feminization of boys/men to continue in our entertainment culture.
We don't want gay rights groups taking the banner of civil rights.
We dont' want gay marriage.

We can work to make sure all people are treated fairly in every situation without making false equations between African Americans and homosexuals. People are defined as gay by virtue of sexual behavior. The government has the right to regulate behavior. If it doesn't then that would attack the basis for most of our laws.

I want the millions of Democrats who agree to take back our party from the activists who are controlling the levers of power.

Don't allow them to control the language, and bully you into silence.
You don't have to support gay rights just because you're a democrat.
You don't have to be quiet because many of them support the rest of the Democratic agenda.
We need a truly progressive agenda that is good for America.
That means not only supporting traditional marriage, but making it better and stronger.

Who are the "we" that you keep referring to?
You seem to think that you speak for all liberals, who are not extremists, and I can say, as for me, you do NOT.
I was right there with you on your stance on most of the other "issues" you listed, but from your rant about gay rights I am in the belief that you are a right winger who is saying you are a Liberal because you think that will draw people in and make people think it is ok to be a bigot.
It is kind of like those idiot Republicans who thought that women and womens rights advocates would automatically vote for Sara Palin just because she was a woman, because all women are that stupid apparently....
I do not believe that you are a Liberal or a Democrat or a Progressive. I think you are a right winger and a bigot.
You wouldn't know equality or fairness or open mindedness if it jumped up and slapped you in the face.
Your arguments against gay marriage and rights are tired, old and on their way out.
Eventually real equality and fairness will be the way and the standard in this country, no matter how the backwards thinking people of its past might try and stop that.
This country has always had some group that they thought were less than equal, less than human, less important. And even though people started a war to try and stop it, we got equal rights for the African Americans and women are now able to work and vote, and are still fighting to make equal pay for equal work.
And just like those struggles in the past for equality the LGBT community will continue to fight for equality and fairness under the law.
And beyond all the reasons legally for this to happen, the whole a gay person is a human being and deserves equal rights to every other human being aspect....
WHY do you or any one else care what a gay couple does.
I do not care about anyone elses marriage except mine.
I am a stay at home mom who has been married to my husband for 6 years.
My marriage in no way affects you or your relationships, just like my lesbian friends marriage does not affect you or your relationships.

ruin the institution???????

marriage will stand and fall or its own merits and not because it is an idealized mechanism of society.

if it works it will be because it has been tested and found to be of merit.

not because it is on everyones wish list.

and certainly not because it was withheld from those who had serious intentions of commitment.

I think you underestimate how many gay people there are. We live in rural areas all over the country. The gay rights lobby is actually relatively weak. We're only narrowing the gaps at the polls through grassroots efforts.

I don't think you get that gay people are not an issue, but people. We can't just go away--we're citizens. 99.9% of us aren't Hollywood types. We're your neighbors and we won't vote for Democrats that are anti-gay.

little late coming, but you are speaking out of both sides of your mouth. try to get past thinking that 'the gays' are trying to turn everything into the last days of rome. i am not gay, am not a strong proponent of gay marriage, but your post is absolutely terrible. it is also obvious to many other than, obviously yourself, that you have a huge problem with gays and cannot come out and just say it. you have zero respect for them. just say it so you can admit it to yourself.
and where did you get the whole blacks hate gays thing? really?

Very well said! We need people to know that they can be liberal without supporting homosexual lifestyles. The all-or-none approach to liberalism is driving this country in the wrong direction because it turns away so many people who are economically liberal but socially conservative. These are the true liberals that are being replaced by radical liberals who have hijacked the liberal movement.

Keep up the good work!
