Today's most important poll number!

McCain takes the lead in the Gallup poll:

McCain 46
Obama 44

I expect this to be temporary because of the positive effect from the Democratic Convention.
I anticipate a 52 - 39 Obama lead as the Republicans meet in Minnesota.

However this poll shows that Obamania has it's limits. What happened in the Democratic Primary was that the liberal democrats had a deep-seated desire not only for an African American to win, but also to be treated with "kid gloves". The McCain camp doesn't have to worry about any threats- real or perceived by black voters. They aren't going to vote for McCain anyway. So Republicans have taken real hard (but fair) shots at Obama and they have hurt.

Part of the reason I resent the Obama campaign is that they allowed themselves and their surrogates to play the "race card" by judging any criticism in racial and unfair terms. This lead to a censorship of Hillary and her supporters. This allowed Obama to win votes he otherwise would lose, that he might lose now as he takes real shots.

This is Obama's first national election.

Let's hope he doesn't have a glass jaw.
