Both are African American men who did wrong.
Lewis was involved in a brawl that resulted in the deaths of two people. He apparently was trying to be a peacemaker, but covered up the incident and obstructed justice at the least.
Kobe Bryant was credibly accused of raping a lady. He lied about the encounter to police, saying they didn't have any sexual contact. He escaped with no charges.
Both are now among the most popular athletes in America. Neither of them face any questions about these past activities, and both feel free to give free-ranging interviews.
So the press, the public, the legal system, etc. all have moved on and expunged their "records".
Yet, any reasonable person knows that they were guilty of serious offenses.
That is evidence of a center left country.
In a center right country, I would imagine they would be held accountable in the court of public opinion at the least.
