Party switch alert: Alan Powell

Saying he could better represent his district as a member of the Georgia state Republican Party, Alan Powell joined the GOP just a few days after winning re-election as a Democrat.

Powell made the move official Monday by caucusing with State House Republicans in Atlanta at the invitation of Speaker David Ralston. He had resigned from the Democratic caucus on Nov. 5.

I disapprove. If he's switching political parties based on what's best for his district, then he should be an Independent. The Republicans should demand he state his commitment to the party to extract a pound of flesh or castigate him. Maybe put him towards the bottom of seniority, shelf his personal requests if he refuses. Our political system works best when people choose sides and sticks with them.
