he had done the proper thing in reference to the Chappaquiddick incident and resigned and not run for re-election. Or if the people of Mass. would have held him accountable for his bad behavior throughout the years which included that incident and many others.
He wouldn't have had the chance to do as much good for the country as he has done over the past few decades.
It is complicated but yet simple. If a current Senator, say a Republican, all democrats including me would demand he be held accountable and not just allowed to move on with his career.
The Senator deserves many of the accolades he has received but this perspective should be explored.
