Today's most important Poll number!

Hotline Poll:

I'd like to get your opinion about the way that things are going in the country
today. Do you feel things in the country are generally going in the right direction, or
do you think things are seriously off on the wrong track?

Right track 15%
Wrong direction 76%

I reject the notion that only 1 in 7 people think the country is on the right track and more than 3 out of 4 think it is on the wrong track.

We are in a rather good spot as a country. More people have access to better technology, and increased opportunity in numerous areas.

What has happened is that people are frustrated from one or more of many small problems such as gas prices or rising mortgage payments and there are politicians and the media to encourage them to be angry about it.

Over 90 percent of families are making their mortgage payments on time. Most people haven't had to change their life in any meaningful way because of high gas prices. Our daily routine is unchanged because of a war in Iraq. And so on.

We have social safety nets of all kinds to help many, many people. Look at the help that was available for Hurricane Gustav victims. As bad as Katrina relief was, nearly everyone was made more than whole from their experience.

In fact, we are doing good by any objective measure. Of course we want to do better, and strive to do so. But please stop trying to make our current situation into a crisis.

We are still the greatest nation on earth. Regardless of the polls.
