Rising Healthcare costs: end of life care

God bless Richard Holbrooke, who passed away this week at the age of 69.

Before he died, doctors performed surgery on his heart to repair a tear in his aorta.

I am searching for a cost on all the care he was given.

While I don't want to mislead anyone, because surely oftentimes the surgeries are successfull and people go on to live productive and valuable lives. Dick Cheney is an example of this.

Ultimately, I come down on the side of doing what is necessary to give everyone as long as life as possible, for as long as it makes sense.

What I am leading you towards is an honest discussion about the cost. Someone has to pay. Somehow. Whether it's through rationing care denied to some. Higher bills for some. Higher taxes to others. Lower quality elsewhere. Whatever.

Unless we develop new technology, and more skilled doctors willing to work on the cheap, America must become more realistic.
